Samuel Francis Smith (1808-1895) was a Baptist clergyman
and poet, as well as writer of many hymns. All but one of
his works have slipped into forgotten antiquity; this one
he wrote while doing undergraduate work at Andover
Theological Seminary, in 1831.

America

My country, 'tis of thee,
Sweet land of liberty,
     Of thee I sing:
Land where my fathers died,
Land of the Pilgrims' pride,
From every mountain-side
     Let freedom ring.
    .    .    .    .    .

Our fathers' God, to thee,
Author of liberty,
     To thee I sing;
Long may our land be bright
With freedom's holy light;
Protect us by They might,
     Great God, our King!
