{"id":5044,"date":"2011-07-17T23:57:53","date_gmt":"2011-07-18T04:57:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.framingham.com\/news\/?p=5044"},"modified":"2011-07-18T00:02:12","modified_gmt":"2011-07-18T05:02:12","slug":"free-kids-nature-activities-at-cochituate-state-park","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.framingham.com\/news\/2011\/07\/17\/general-interest\/free-kids-nature-activities-at-cochituate-state-park\/","title":{"rendered":"FREE Kids Nature Activities at Cochituate State Park"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_5046\" style=\"width: 260px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.framingham.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/cochituate.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5046\" class=\"size-full wp-image-5046\" title=\"Cochituate State Park\" src=\"http:\/\/www.framingham.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/cochituate.jpg\" alt=\"Cochituate State Park\" width=\"250\" height=\"202\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-5046\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">There&#39;s lots to do at Cochituate State Park!<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>FRAMINGHAM, MA<\/strong> - Between the towns of Framingham, Wayland and Natick, MA, <strong>Lake Cochituate <\/strong>offer many recreational summer activities including swimming, boating and fishing.<\/p>\n<p>Many locals may not realize that just a few hundred yards east of the Framingham\/Natick town line, <em>(on Rt. 30)<\/em>, the beach, picnic area, boat launch, snack bar and canoe rental shop are in \"<strong>Cochituate State Park\"<\/strong>, which is part of the Massachusetts State Park system and operated by the <strong>MA Dept. of Conservation and Recreation.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Throughout the months of <strong>July and August<\/strong>, <em>(Tuesdays-Saturdays),<\/em> the park provides fun, educational, and <strong>FREE summer activities for kids and families!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Most of the activities have a different theme each week, so<!--more--> frequent visitors can enjoy learning and doing different things -- and kids won't complain<em> \"I already did that last week\".<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Several of the activities take place at the park's <strong>Nature Center<\/strong> which is located to the right of the park's\u00a0 entrance (off Rt. 30).<\/p>\n<p>Although most of the activities are free, there is an admission\/parking fee of $5.00 per car, <em>(and a fee for canoe or kayak rental if you choose to participate in the Saturday paddle program)<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>The following is a weekly schedule of July\/August <strong>(2011) activities.<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>(See info below to view or download detailed calendar of events and park info)<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><em>Most activities last approximately (1) hour.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Tuesdays:<\/strong><\/span><em><\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em><\/em><strong>Nature Center<\/strong> is open in afternoon. Kids can participate in group activities or check out a <em>discovery pack<\/em> and take it to a picnic table to enjoy by themselves or with family or friends.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Wednesdays:<\/strong> <em><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>10:00 a.m<em>.<\/em>\u00a0<\/strong> - <strong>Craft making and Stories<\/strong>, <em>(at Nature Center)<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>2:00 p.m.<\/strong> -\u00a0 <strong>\"Water Comes to Boston\"<\/strong>,\u00a0 a historical program about Lake Cochituate <em>(at beach)<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Thursdays:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>10:00 a.m. - \"<strong>Kidleidoscope\"<\/strong>, pre-school nature program, (for ages 3 to 6). New theme each week, lasts about an hour, <em>(meets at Nature Center)<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>2:00 p.m. - <strong>Become a Massachusetts Junior Ranger!<\/strong>, (ages 7-11). New topic about nature each week. This is an 8-week program run by park staff.\u00a0 Kids receive a workbook with activities to do at home or in the park and can earn a certificate and a <em>\"Junior Ranger\"<\/em> patch for completing the course -- but drop-ins are welcome!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Fridays:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>10:00 a.m. - <strong>Group Sports &amp; <strong>Recreation<br \/>\n<\/strong>activities<\/strong>, <em>(equipment is available, meet at field near Nature Center).<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>2:00 p.m. - <strong>Beach Exploration!<\/strong><em> (meet at beach)<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Saturdays:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>10:00 a.m. - <strong>Guided Paddle around Lake Cochituate<\/strong>. Bring your own canoe or kayak or rent one from Charles River Canoe and Kayak located inside the park.
