{"id":5051,"date":"2011-07-19T13:06:32","date_gmt":"2011-07-19T18:06:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.framingham.com\/news\/?p=5051"},"modified":"2011-07-19T18:07:18","modified_gmt":"2011-07-19T23:07:18","slug":"alumni-association-announces-framingham-state-2011-2012-scholarships","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.framingham.com\/news\/2011\/07\/19\/uncategorized\/alumni-association-announces-framingham-state-2011-2012-scholarships\/","title":{"rendered":"Alumni Association Announces Framingham State 2011-2012 Scholarships"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"mceTemp\" style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<dl id=\"attachment_5068\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\" style=\"width: 310px;\">\n<dt class=\"wp-caption-dt\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.framingham.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/20110719-alumni-house-650x400.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-5068\" title=\"Alumni House, Framingham State University\" src=\"http:\/\/www.framingham.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/20110719-alumni-house-650x400-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Alumni House, Framingham State University\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.framingham.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/20110719-alumni-house-650x400-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.framingham.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/20110719-alumni-house-650x400.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/dt>\n<dd class=\"wp-caption-dd\" style=\"text-align:center;\">Alumni House<\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong>FRAMINGHAM, MA<\/strong>- The Independent Association of Framingham State Alumni, <em>(\"IAFSA\")<\/em>, a self-governing, non-profit organization established in 1874 which receives and administers funds that provide scholarships and interest-free loans to FSU students, has announced its list of 2011-2012 scholarship winners.<\/p>\n<p>Scholarships, <em>(and loan funding)<\/em>, are made possible by donations, bequests, and rental of the Alumni House.<\/p>\n<p>Scholarships ranged from $500 to $2500.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Verena Lutz<\/strong> and <strong>Mariya Dzhyoyeva<\/strong> were the only Framingham residents among the 2011-2012 recipients. Both received a <em>\"Dorothy Larned Scholarship\"<\/em> award. The scholarship, which encourages the sharing of international cultures was <!--more-->established by the Class of 1939 to honor Dorothy Larned who came to FSU to teach French in 1929, <em>(at the time the school was known as \"Framingham Normal School\").<\/em> Larned went on to serve as Dean of Women for many years until her retirement in 1961. <strong>Spencer Buell<\/strong>, of Shrewsbury, MA was also awarded a Dorothy Larned Scholarship.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, <strong>Buell<\/strong> received a <em>\"Marilyn Minahan Foley Scholarship\"<\/em>. While she was a student, Marilyn served as editor of the student newspaper, <em>The Gatepost<\/em>. She later served for many years as the executive secretary of IAFSA. When she retired the scholarship was established for future editors-in-chief of the newspaper. <strong>Buell<\/strong> is the current Editor-in-chief of The Gatepost and also submits articles as a correspondent for his hometown newspaper, <em>The Shrewsbury Chronicle<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Two recipients from Ashland received scholarships: <strong>Sandaradura Chamara Silva<\/strong> was awarded the <em>\"Class of 1941 Scholarship\"<\/em> and<strong> Grace Solovieff-Mahoney<\/strong> was awarded the <em>\"The Ethel Groves Lucas Scholarship\"<\/em> which was established in memory of Ethel who graduated from the university, later returned to teach, and served as President of the Alumni Class of 1935.<\/p>\n<p>Three residents of Marlborough received awards: <strong>Amanda Cain-Mailly<\/strong> and <strong>Julie Cain-Mailly<\/strong> were both awarded <em>\"Class of 1954 Scholarships\"<\/em>, and <strong>Tanya Lopes<\/strong> was awarded the<em> \"Mary Melley Cotter Scholarship\"<\/em>, made possible by donations made in Mary's memory at the time of her death in 1981 and a gift from Paul &amp; Kathleen Cotter. Mary, a graduate of the Class of 1962, was active in Home Economics education, served as President of IAFSA in 1973, and was also a recipient of association's Distinguished Service Award.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jessica Brooks<\/strong> of Plainville, MA was awarded a <em>\"Catherine S. Parker Scholarship\".<\/em> The fund was established by her sister, Hope Parker, in memory of Catherine, a 1924 graduate who majored in Home Economics, then in 1931 earned a B.S. in Education, taught Home Economics in Saxonville, then worked for 36 years in public relations for the Massachusetts Electric Company.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Angela Martin<\/strong> of Dracut, MA was awarded <em>\"The Boston Chapter of the American Sewing Guild Memorial Scholarship\"<\/em> which was established in 2010 in honor of former membership chair Carole Dahlstrom. The scholarship is available to <em>\"a Massachusetts undergraduate, with a demonstrated talent for garment construction\"<\/em>, who fulfills the Guild's mission of <em>\"Advancing Sewing as an Art and Life Skill.\"<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Other 2011-2012 IAFSA Scholarship recipients include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Nicole Hanley<\/strong> <em>of Waltham, MA<\/em> - Alumni General Scholarship<\/li>\n<li><strong>Krista Landry<\/strong> <strong>of Hopedale, MA<\/strong> - Alumni General Scholarship<\/li>\n<li><strong>Nicolas Marini<\/strong> <em>of Waltham, MA<\/em> - Alumni General Scholarship<\/li>\n<li><strong>John Mill<\/strong> <em>of Medway, MA<\/em> - Alumni General Scholarship<\/li>\n<li><strong>Catherine K. It may be used for family occasions, business meetings, corporate retreats, or social events.
