{"id":5348,"date":"2011-08-16T15:52:14","date_gmt":"2011-08-16T20:52:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.framingham.com\/news\/?p=5348"},"modified":"2011-08-24T00:27:40","modified_gmt":"2011-08-24T05:27:40","slug":"free-nature-activities-at-cochituate-state-park-august-2011","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.framingham.com\/news\/2011\/08\/16\/general-interest\/free-nature-activities-at-cochituate-state-park-august-2011\/","title":{"rendered":"FREE Nature Activities at Cochituate State Park for Month of August 2011"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_5046\" style=\"width: 260px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.framingham.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/cochituate.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5046\" class=\"size-full wp-image-5046\" title=\"Cochituate State Park\" src=\"http:\/\/www.framingham.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/cochituate.jpg\" alt=\"Cochituate State Park\" width=\"250\" height=\"202\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-5046\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">There&#39;s lots to do at Cochituate State Park!<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>FRAMINGHAM, MA<\/strong> - Between the towns of Natick, Wayland and Framingham, MA, <strong>Lake Cochituate <\/strong>offer many recreational summer activities including swimming, boating and fishing.<\/p>\n<p>Many locals may not realize that just a few hundred yards east of the Framingham\/Natick town line, <em>(on Rt. 30)<\/em>, the beach, picnic area, boat launch, snack bar and canoe\/kayak rental shop are in <strong>Cochituate State Park, <\/strong>(which is operated by the MA Dept. of Conservation and Recreation).<\/p>\n<p>Below is a list of fun, educational <strong>FREE summer activities for kids and families <\/strong>available at the park during the month of <strong>August 2011<\/strong>, <em>(Tuesdays-Saturdays)<\/em><strong><em>.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Most of the activities have a different theme each week, so <!--more-->frequent visitors can enjoy learning and doing different things -- and kids won't complain<em> \"I already did that last week\".<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Several of the activities take place at the park's <strong>Nature Center<\/strong> which is located to the right of the park's\u00a0 entrance (off Rt. 30).<\/p>\n<p>Although most of the activities are free, there is an admission\/parking fee of $5.00 per car, <em>(and a fee for canoe or kayak rental if you choose to participate in the Tuesday paddle program)<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The following is a weekly schedule of August <strong>(2011) activities.<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>(See info below to view or download detailed calendar of events and park info)<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Most activities last approximately (1) hour unless otherwise noted.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Tuesdays:<\/strong><em><\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>11:00 a.m.<strong> - Paddle Lake Cochituate<\/strong> -\u00a0 meet at the boat ramp. Bring your own kayak or canoe, or rent one from Charles River Canoe and Kayak which operates the boathouse. <em>(Program participants receive a 20% off discount on rental).<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>2:00p.m. -<strong> Learn to Fish!<\/strong> - meets at the Nature Center. All materials are provided! Park staff\u00a0 will instruct kids how to bait, cast and reel a fishing rod!\u00a0 After the lesson, kids can take their new skills and head over to the boat ramp and catch some fish right out of Lake Cochituate!.\u00a0<em>(Appropriate for children over 6 years old.)<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Wednesdays:<\/strong> <em><\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>11:00 a.m<em>.<\/em>\u00a0 - <strong>Craft making and Stories<\/strong>, <em>(at Nature Center), <\/em>a different theme each week.<em><br \/>\n<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>2:00 p.m. -\u00a0 <strong>\"Water Comes to Boston\"<\/strong>,\u00a0 a historical program about Lake Cochituate<em>, (at beach)<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Thursdays:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>11:00 a.m. - \"<strong>Kidleidoscope\"<\/strong>, pre-school nature program. New theme each week, lasts about an hour, <em>(meets at Nature Center)<\/em> For ages 3-6. All children <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">must<\/span> be accompanied by an adult.<em><br \/>\n<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>2:00 p.m. - <strong>Become a Massachusetts Junior Ranger!<\/strong>, (ages 7-11). New topic about nature each week.\u00a0 Kids receive a workbook with activities to do at home or in the park and can earn a certificate and a <em>\"Junior Ranger\"<\/em> patch for completing the course!\u00a0 (<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>NOTE:<\/strong><\/span> This 8-week program which started in July is halfway over for the season, but <strong>kids are still welcome to drop-in and enjoy the weekly activities<\/strong>).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Fridays:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>11:00 a.m. - <strong>Group Sports &amp; <strong>Recreation<\/strong> Activities<\/strong>, <em>(equipment is available, meet at field near Nature Center).<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>2:00 p.m. - <strong>Beach Exploration!<\/strong><em> - <\/em><em>(meet at beach) <\/em>Search for living plants and animals around the beach and edges of the picnic area.\u00a0 Appropriate for children age 6 and up.
