What is a Big Brother or Big Sister?
A Big Brother or Big Sister is a very special person.
An Adult volunteer 18 and older who is interested and willing to work in a unique, one-to-one, professionally supervised friendship with a child. Big Brothers and Big Sisters must make at least a one-year commitment to serve and must be prepared to spend a minimum of 3-5 hours per week with their little brother or little sister.
Big Brothers/Big sisters agency staff carefully evaluate prospective volunteers, basing the match on the needs of the child and the interests of the volunteer.
Once a match is made, the agency's professional caseworkers are there to provide advice, and the support necessary to help grow and mature.
Children from single-parent homes are being matched with adult volunteers at over 500 agencies located throughout the United States. The children as well as the volunteers come from all walks of life, and domonstrate the diversity of their communities.
The goal of the program is to help children realize their personal potential, enhance self-esteem, and broaden theor life experiences.
|
A recent study showed that children matched in our program for an 18 month period were:
- 46% less likely to begin using illegal drugs.
- 27% less likely to begin using alcohol.
- 52% less likely to skip class.
- 1/3 less likely to hit someone.
- more confident of their performance in school.
- getting along better with their families.
You can make a difference in a child's life.
Please call us today to volunteer.
We have several programs that are designed to accomodate busy professionals.

Become a hero.
Help a child
grow into
their dreams.
Growing up is never easy.
But having a special friend helps a lot.
And when that friend is older, wiser and willing to take the time to listen, that is special indeed.
Big Brother and Big Sisters provides special friendships to boys and girls, primarily from single parent homes.
Having a Big Brother or a Big Sister can help a child handle life's ups and downs.
Of course not all growing children need a volunteer Big Brother or Big Sister.
But for many children, especially boys and girls who have only one parent in the home, there is a need.
When a child loses a parent through divorce, seperation or death, the impact can be devastating.
Often the remaining parent is unable to provide all the attention the child needs.
In those cases, a Big Borther or Big Sister can be the friend who provides the balance necessary to bring a childs life back on an even keel.
Think about it.
How many chances do you get
Being a
Big Brother
or Big Sister
will take
just a little
of your time
to really make a difference?
Big Brothers Big Sisters will give you that chance.
By volunteering, you benefit a child directly.
You can see the good you're doing --- week by week, month by month.
And it isn't difficult.
Your job is not to replace a parent.
You just have to be a friend.
What could be simpler?
We're all busy.
Most of us have some time to spare.
Just a few hours a week of your time can mean the world to a child who has been waiting month -- even years -- for an adult to care enough to volunteer.
Being a Big Brother or a Big Sister isn't hard work.
It's trips to the zoo, or afternoons fishing; it's shopping excursions and baseball games.
It's sitting on a park bench listening to what's going on in a child's life and giving advice when asked.
It's the closest thing to being a kid again.
What could be
more fun?
