Jazz Jam with host Ted Knowlton
"Our group starts with bass, drums, and piano. Ken & I (Ted) have been around longer than the other Jazz Jam musicians. We are probably not as "out of the box" (that's Michael's favorite term) as some of the younger musicians hosting the Jam, but we bring a wealth of jazz experience to the party." And, we love "out of the box" folks to jam with. Give us your freedom of expression; we give you a solid base of jazz experience. You draw us out; we draw you out!Our bassist, Ken Steiner, has extraordinary pizzicato technique. He has been gigging in the Boston area for the last 35 years in a variety of settings. In addition, Ken helps keep everyone on the same page. I hesitate to say he keeps us straight, but you'll know what I mean when you jump in." - TedAbout the Jam:The jam balances high level playing with a spirit of welcome andcommunity. After 15 solo recordings and nearly two decades of touring the world, he is one of the most well-respected players on the circuit. His concerts are legendary: from coast-to-coast, country-to-country, one man, one guitar, rollin' and tumblin' like nobody's business. His musical vision spans continents and genres--blues, jazz, slide, fingerstyle--where funky chords, walking bass lines, and fiery riffs abound. Citing the influence of players as diverse as John Fahey, Ry Cooder, John Renbourne, Eric Clapton, and Joseph Spence, Dirty Linen magazine calls Brooks Williams one of "America's musical treasures." "At the root of every riff is the blues, it informs everything I play, write, and arrange," says Williams.Tony Astolfi, a former student of Brooks Williams, has joyfully been studying the acoustic guitar for over a decade, drawing inspiration from a pioneering generation of steel string solo guitarists like Leo Kottke, Michael Hedges, Phil Keaggy, and Pierre Bensusan. Tony incorporates a wide range of musical styles into his solo acoustic playing, from blues, jazz, and gospel to classical, rock and Celtic traditional music.

Jamie directs the Jazz program at the Rivers Music School. He received his MM degree in jazz composition from the New England Conservatory and has recently recorded two CDs of original works with Tony Malaby, George Schuller, Alexei Tsiganov, John Hebert and John Lockwood. Jamie's band is always very high level with the Rivers faculty forming the heart of the group.About the Jam:The jam balances high level playing with a spirit of welcome andcommunity. Five host bands take turns making your visit to the jam arewarding and enjoyable experience. Each week a different group and eachweek a different feel. Here you can hone your skills and trade lick'swith some of the finest players in the area. Whether you're a pro or astudent, you'll have a great time."Back in the days before jazz education moved into the conservatory, kids who wanted to watch a jazz performance or sit in with the band hadto sneak into the smoke-filled bars where the musicians congregated. Nowthe access to the material is much more immediate through the multiplesources of media that are immediately accessible to us. Unfortunatelythe jazz club environment that spawned and nurtured American jazz hasalmost completely died out and young musicians have virtually no outletfor performance in front of a live, non-academic audience. We havecreated just such an environment minus the booze and cigarette smoke, onTuesday nights where a high level group of professional jazz musicianscomes in and performs a set and then opens things up for people to sitin." – Jamie Stewardson director of Jazz Rivers Music School – Weston MAOur Jam Leaders1st Tuesdays Daryl Lowery w/ Berklee College Faculty2nd Tuesdays Ted Knowlton3rd Tuesdays John Funkhouser4th Tuesdays Jamie Stewardson and the Rivers School Faculty5th Tuesdays Kaoruko
