FRAMINGHAM, MA -- Here are the February 2009 Happenings at the Callahan Senior Center:

Town of Framingham & Callahan Center Snowstorm Policy Notice: If the schools close due to snowstorms or other inclement weather days, there will be no activities at the Center. On these days, the Town of Framingham Staff will be available to you at the Center, unless the Town of Framingham declares an emergency closing.

NEEDED: Data Entry Volunteer - The Callahan Center is looking for a Volunteer who is computer-literate in Word & Excel to input data. Four-hour shifts available. Please call Lorraine Fournier at 508-532-5980, ext. 4102 to apply.

Support Groups at Callahan Senior Center:

Bereavement Support Group: Mondays, February 2, 9, & 23 at 10:00 am.

‘Better Breathers’ Support Group: Wednesday, February 11 at 12:00 noon.

Caregivers’ Support Group: Tuesday, February 10 at 10:30 am.

Diabetes Support Group: Tuesday, February 24 at 10:00 am.

Grandparent Support Group: Wednesday, February 25 at 7:00 pm. Please always call the Center to confirm in case the date changes.

Low Vision Group: No meetings in January or February.

Massage Therapy: Thursdays, February 5 & 19 (by appt. only).

Parkinson’s Support Group: Tuesday, February 17 at 1:30 pm.

Podiatry: Wed., February 11 with Dr. John 12:30 - 4:00 pm . Wednesday, February 25, with Dr. Lukoff from 1:00 - 3:30 pm (by appt. only).

Stroke Survivors’ Support Group: Monday, February 2 at 1:00 pm.

BLOOD PRESSURE CLINIC FOR FEBRUARY: Wednesdays, February 4, 11, 18 & 25 from 9:00—12:30 pm.

Thursday, February 5, 2009 at Callahan Center - 10:00 am—12:00 pm COLLETTE TRAVEL SHOW……...highlights of our tours for 2009. Don’t miss it!!!

February 9, 2008 at 10:00 am - The Framingham Garden Club will be here to assist those interested in creating a Valentine’s Day arrangement. There is a fee of $5.00 to cover the cost of materials. Please bring your own scissors. Seating is limited; please call the Center at 508-532-5980 to sign up no later than Wednesday, February 4th. No walk-ins.

FRIENDS OF CALLAHAN - The next general meeting of the Friends of Callahan will be on Monday, February 9th, 2009 at 1:30 pm at the Callahan Center. This will be a joint Valentine’s Day celebration with the Callahan Center and entertainment will be provided by Roy Michaels and his super vocals.

On Tuesday, February 10, 2009 at 10:00 am, the students from the Fuller Middle School will be at the Callahan Center to assist with the Foster Children’s Program, coordinated by Evelyn Langley.

Framingham’s 2009 Heart Forum - Tuesday, February 10th from 10:00 am—12:00 noon at the Framingham Public Library on Lexington Street.

Thursday, February 26, 2009 at 10:00 am at Callahan Center - “Natural Treatment for Urinary Incontinence” with Dr. Shimon Segal. Tired of involuntary loss of urine, medication side effects? Trying to avoid surgery? Tale control today!

Callahan Center in Partnership with Framingham State College Lifelong Learners Presents: “Films and Recordings of a Mardi Gras Celebration” with John Clark, Musician on Thursday, February 19th, 2009 - 10:00 am at Callahan Center and Movie, Lecture & Discussion: “Racial and Ethical Prejudices in Film” with Dr. Lawrence Lowenthal on Tuesday, February 24 and Tuesday, March 3, 2009 - 5:45 pm at the Callahan Center.

Coming in March: “Taking Care of Yourself and Others” - On Tuesday, March 3rd @ 10:00 am. Depression Screening: Following the “Taking Care of Yourself and Others” presentation, at 11:00 am, The Samaritans, Inc. and The Advocates, Inc. are offering free mental health screenings for older adults to help assess whether you are suffering from depression or generalized anxiety disorder.

Are you looking for a meaningful and challenging volunteer opportunity? Consider becoming a Certified SHINE (Medicare) Counselor! The SHINE program helps seniors and disabled individuals on Medicare to understand the many and increasingly complex insurance options available to them. The need for trained volunteers to educate and provide unbiased information has never been greater.

The next SHINE training will begin in March and run for two days per week over a six-week period at Whitney Place at Natick. For more information about becoming a SHINE Counselor, call Dorene Nemeth, MetroWest Regional SHINE Director at (508) 532-5980 x 4109. Bilingual, bicultural and minority individuals are encouraged to apply.

Heritage Gallery - Don’t forget your Valentine! We have a nice variety of jewelry, baby items, crystal, china and much more! The Heritage Gallery offers a lay-away plan where you can pay weekly or monthly. We are open Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 10:00 am until 2:15 pm. We are located at the Callahan Center, 535 Union Avenue, Framingham.
